Manchester Airport Sets New Record for July Passenger Traffic

Posted on August 14, 2025August 14, 2025 by admin

Manchester Airport has celebrated its busiest July on record, with nearly 3.3 million travellers passing through its terminals, making it the second busiest month ever for the UK’s main northern hub.

A significant milestone was reached on Friday, 25 July, with over 60,000 passengers departing in a single day. The month’s overall peak came on 31 July, when the airport handled an impressive 113,000 travellers. With the August bank holiday ahead, the airport is preparing for even higher volumes, forecasting 118,000 passengers on Friday, 22 August.

Despite the surge in traffic, airport operations remained efficient. In July, 98% of passengers cleared security within 15 minutes, and almost 75% did so in under five minutes. Much of the improved experience is thanks to the newly unveiled section of Terminal 2, a key milestone in the airport’s £1.3 billion transformation programme.

The expanded terminal offers a refreshed travel experience with a host of new shops and dining options. Notably, it includes the UK’s first LEGO Store within an airport, alongside brands like Pandora, Rituals, and Joe & the Juice. Further additions, including Chanel, the Fever Tree cocktail and champagne bar, and the Great Northern Market food court, are scheduled to open later this year.

Sun-seeking holidaymakers drove much of July’s traffic, with Palma de Mallorca topping the list (116,422 passengers), followed by Dublin (96,426) and Antalya (95,321). Popular long-haul destinations included Orlando, New York, and Toronto.

Managing Director Chris Woodroofe emphasized the airport’s commitment to ensuring a smooth travel experience, noting the success of the revamped facilities and minimal queuing times during the busy summer period.

The full opening of Terminal 2, set to accommodate over 70% of the airport’s passengers, is on track for later this year, after which Terminal 1 will close. The redevelopment also brings 13 new aircraft stands, enhanced boarding areas, and a new chandelier centerpiece that pays tribute to the airport’s heritage.
